SmileDirectClub claims to be able to correct most cases of teeth spacing, but do customer testimonials support this?
Overall, yes! In most cases, spacing issues were corrected in the standard timeframe without the need for multiple refinements, and customers stated over and over again how much they loved their new smile. Just keep in mind that if you are looking to correct spacing and other alignment issues, your experience might be a bit different — treatment may take longer and/or require refinements.
But don’t just take our word for it. Check out the authentic reviews below to learn more about treating teeth spacing with SmileDirectClub.

Overall, I am satisfied and my teeth are way better than they were after a 5-month plan and 1 set of refinements. However, SDC is definitely not the quality that you’d expect from working with a traditional orthodontist.
The good:
– I chose SDC due to the cheaper price compared to Invisalign and braces. Convenient payment plans are available in addition to occasional discounts.
– The scans in the smile shop are painless and also kind of cool to look at.
– Packaging is great and aligners are well organized.
– You can keep asking for refinements until you’re satisfied, or until they say they can’t help anymore. I only had one set of refinements before I felt satisfied enough.
– With all of the extra brushing and flossing, my teeth have never been so white.
– My teeth were sensitive for the first few days of each aligner, but not unbearable. Enough where I wouldn’t want to chew on my front teeth but not enough to stop me from eating anything I wanted to.
– I ate way less. I kept thinking “is this worth the brushing and flossing?”The bad:
– Do NOT expect incredible customer service. I ended up with THREE pairs of free retainers due to their customer service miscommunications, including having an appointment at a Smile Shop when the building was closed. I honestly had the best luck with talking to their Twitter account rather than calling or emailing.
– You’ll need to invest in dental wax, Tylenol, and something to file your aligners with. Sometimes they’ll tear up your mouth.
– You do NOT have constant monitoring by your doctor. You have ONE 90-day check-in where you send in photos. It’s kind of up to you to decide whether you need to talk to SDC or your dentist if things aren’t right.
– Have your smile plan reviewed before you start! Luckily, I did not have problems before or after with my bite. However, I have seen SDC create smile plans resulting in terrible crossbites. Fixing bites is not their priority.
– The Smile Shop employees are VERY pushy. You don’t have to sign up at the shop, though they will definitely try to make you. I’d recommend waiting to receive your smile plan.Helpful?Ciara O.Coquitlam, Canada3 years agoCrowdingSpacingI have always had insecurities about my bottom teeth, overcrowded, hard to brush, generally embarrassing. I have never been able to afford braces and was looking into Invisalign. It’s a lot of money so I took my time making a decision but found out about SDC in the process.
I did about a year of research on SDC before taking the leap. I knew every bad thing that could happen but all the good outweighed the bad. I knew SDC was only for a quick straight smile and not a proper smile. My treatment was 7 months along because I had severe crowding, had no issues with any of my aligners, I got to month 7 and my teeth weren’t straight yet so I get 3 more months to fix the problem tooth.
The process was generally quick. I didn’t have to wait long for anything. I had a 3 aligner a month plan, 1- one week, 2- 1 week, and 3/4 2 weeks. mild pain on my first set and some sets in months 5-6 when major shifting started. the pros: was very cheap. I paid $2200 CAD out of pocket. I paid in a lump sum instead of over time. I’m happy with how they turned out. the process was quick and easy. the cons: My bite is a little off, but it was when I started so I traded ugly teeth and an off-bite for nice teeth and an off-bite. The retainers suck and are too much money. $100CAD for 6 months wear on one retainer. You can get a Hawley or a sturdier one from another company for around 400CAD and those last 5-10 years.
My first retainer was free so I won’t need to purchase one yet but will be going with someone else for my retainers. All in all I recommend SDC IF you have already gone to a dentist to make sure you have a healthy mouth that can go thru aligners. and you actually do your research and are aware that you won’t get PERFECT results. Most of the negative reviews stem from people who did no research and expected something that is impossible with clear aligners.
Helpful?Daniel R.Bosie, ID2 years agoCrowdingSpacingI was very satisfied with how the product worked. It was something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time and did it. My biggest complaint is probably how long I had to work on the teeth sets each time I changed it. They had all kinds of extra plastic and sharp edges that would have to be cut down and filed down in order to not tear up your cheeks or tongue was uncomfortable. I had to spend extra money on some electric files to do this.
I’m happy with the results except they could have been better. They said, “You’ll have to send us this form and these pictures, and we’ll determine if we send you back into an actual SmileDirect brick-and-mortar building or not to look at that.” I did but I never got one reply. I have never heard another word from them in the last year, the day I got done with my treatment. But I’m overall satisfied with SmileDirectClub for the price I paid. I would still recommend them and have. I just did. My nephew asked me who I used and if I would recommend it, and I said yes.
Helpful?Eddie P.Roanoke, Virginia2 years agoSpacingTooth GapI chose Smile Direct Club because of the price and the fact that there was the option to just wear the aligners for 10 hours at night. This eliminated the problem of having to take them out and clean them every time you eat or drink. I have always had a gap between my front teeth that I was self-conscious about. The process of ordering them was very easy and customer support was always quick to answer any questions I had. I finished my aligners in September and since my teeth aren’t exactly as I had hoped (still a gap in the front), I contacted smile direct club and they are sending me some refinements (more aligners) to help me further close the gap in my front teeth. Hopefully this will do the trick!
Helpful?Eric A.Colorado1 year agoSpacingTooth GapBasically I want to say that these are painful. The worst part about them is the pain and cleaning them. I am a germophobe and I swear it grosses me out to look at them after I take them out. But if you can get through the pain and the grossness you can have some great results!! I have been at it for a while, because I had to take a break due to a loss in the family and my mental health but I am back on the train now. I had to go back a few aligners because my teeth shifted back. My dentist is happy with my progress and said that I will need a permanent retainer after this is over. I will be happy to pay for it because I dont want this work to go for nothing. Keep in mind my photos arent final (:
Helpful?Alexa K.Sioux Falls, SD3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapOverbiteCrossbiteI chose smile direct because I was very insecure about my teeth, and insurance wouldn’t cover it. I went in for a scan and they gave me whitening gel, a light, and lip balm. Loved the lip balm! The wait took a while, even though I had an appointment. I wanted to fix my front gap. Customer support has been great. Easiest to reach out to on messenger. Love my results, but here’s some cons : they crack easy, you have to file down or use dental wax because it cut my tongue and cheeks up to the point where I couldn’t eat . They shift back very quickly, so make sure u always wear them.
Advice if u are looking to try SDC: always keep ur previous aligners. I’ve had to go weeks without them multiple times due to getting chewed up by my dog and cracks. The shipping is expected to take over a month for a new retainer, or aligner. Also, if you have Facebook I recommend joining a smile direct club members group, it helped me a lot with any problems or questions.
Helpful?Ella W.Joppa, Maryland1 year agoSpacingTooth GapI decided to get aligners because I was insecure about the gap between my two front teeth. Honestly, what made me choose Smile Direct Club is because they had an ongoing promotion! Plus they had options for overnight aligners, since all day ones were NOT for me. I was a little surprised by how much the first night hurt, but thankfully the pain eased quickly! Nowadays, I’m just surprised by how fast it goes! I’m already halfway done my treatment and it feels like I just started. If there’s any advice I’d give, it’s not to be put off by the initial discomfort! It passes quickly, and it’s totally worth it. Already, I see a world of difference, and my confidence has definitely improved. I’d definitely recommend!
Helpful?Jason L.Dallas, TX3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapIf you are on the fence about this…hop down and head over to make it happen! Is it painful, yes. Is it hard to wear them all the time, yes. Is it risky, yes. But, if you are like me and you think that you could benefit from some minor corrections, then go for it! If you have a LOT of moving to do, you probably need to see a regular orthodontist and get braces. For the minor stuff, this is the way to go! Join a group and ask questions! I did have to have refinements, but seriously just relax and do this. Oh, also if you are one of those absolute perfectionists…go see an orthodontist. This is not for you. This is for people with a “C” smile who want to go to a “B+” or maybe “A-” if you are lucky.
Helpful?Kylie C.USA3 years agoSpacing5 stars. 10/10. 100%. I chose smile direct club to straighten my teeth after hearing nothing but great things about the company. I never had braces when I was a teen and have always been insecure about my gapping. I just straight up have tiny teeth, think toddler size. I looked to smile direct club to bring my teeth together and straight so they didn’t jut put anymore and smile direct club delivered. I did the impression kit myself, super easy with easy to follow instructions. Did the daytime aligners and never once had any sort of problem!
Anytime I had a question I emailed customer service and they were sure to get back to me very promptly and ridiculously nicely. I’m left with straight teeth after finishing treatment and the small gaps I do have left are simply because of the size and shape of my teeth, that I can get bonded if I want to but I don’t feel the need to, I’m happy with my smile now.
Helpful?Hannah B.Charlotte, NC2 years agoSpacingOverbiteDecided to go with SmileDirect due to price. My orthodontist quoted me nearly $2,500 more for only braces on the top. Halfway through my treatment a set of aligners didn’t fit. Not having the previous set I had to get my teeth scanned again.
Keep in mind they take about a month to get shipped. This led to my teeth fully shifting back and making my 4 month journey almost 9 months. The aligners are so thick that they messed up my bite (I now have a permanent 1 1/2 cm. open bite). The thickness also resulted in my jaw pooping every time I open and close thankfully it don’t hurt.
All in all the process wasn’t too painful but you never even meet a dental professional absolutely seems like a pyramid scheme.
Helpful?Tiffany Z.Cleveland2 years agoCrowdingSpacingSo first off let me start with saying I’ve had braces prior to doing SDC. I didn’t wear my retainers and my teeth shifted so when I saw the commercials for it I decided why not.
I went into a smile shop and got a scan because I figured there are lots of things that can go wrong if I just do the imprints at home (but I get that some people don’t have that luxury but if you can, go and get scanned). The scan was fine, the 3D image of what my teeth would look like at the end was great, so I decided to do it.
My ‘teeth’ (that’s what I call the aligners) came 5 weeks after my scan and I popped in the first set. It hurt soooo much but after a childhood of braces the pain was familiar and went away after going through a couple more sets.
The whole treatment experience was fine, I never had an issue with the teeth fitting wrong or things coming broken. But my only issue is that towards the end of my 5 month treatment I noticed that my teeth weren’t as straight as I wanted them to be. One tooth was slightly recessed(?), it wasn’t flush with the rest of my teeth. And my K9’s weren’t completely straight.
So by now I’ve finished my treatment and I go into the smile shop to get another scan to hopefully start a round of refinements. The employee at the shop said he saw what I was talking about and that I would be approved for refinements. 2 days later I get an email from the dental team saying that I was denied and that nothing further could be done. Needless to say I was livid. I paid a lot of money to straighten my teeth and now they weren’t even what I wanted them to be. I chatted with a representative and he said per policy if the dental team says nothing else can be done you can’t get a refund. So I said whatever let me just get my retainers and be done with it. I’ve made an appointment with the orthodontist to see if regular braces will fix my teeth. Which really it’s just some minor moving.
All in all I would recommend SDC for people who’ve had braces or don’t need significant changes to their teeth. And I would also recommend that you go in every 2 months ish and get a scan to see if any refinements need to be made.
TL;DR – It’s worth it in my opinion, but just make sure you don’t have any major things to do with your teeth or else it might not be for you.
Helpful?David B.Durham, NC3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI was always scared to smile and I always had a low self esteem so I decided to fix my teeth with the cheapest way possible which ended up being smile direct club. When I first went in for the scan they seemed very pushy for me to start quickly as all I was very suspicious but I went along with them. My teeth hurt which I would expect since my teeth were being moved around. 4 months in out of my total 6 month treatment I started seeing major changes. I am now done with treatment and couldn’t be anymore happier. I can finally smile and feel confident in my own skin. I did have to do a 2 months of refinements but it was all worth it.
Helpful?Lindsay K.Dallas, TX2 years agoCrowdingSpacingI am super happy with my results on SDC! If you are still thinking about spending the money, just do it. I wasnt expecting much and I had some disposable income from my tax return so I decided to give SDC a try. It was so worth it. My bottom teeth are 10x better and my confidence level is so much higher now.
To note:
1. This is not the perfection of traditional braces. This is a cheaper, faster, alternative.
2. The pain is tough with each new aligner. Use some OTC pain pills and start new aligners at night.I hope your results are as awesome as mine!
Helpful?Kevin E.Maine3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapSmile Direct Club is a great company with friendly staff. Sometimes they can be hard to get a hold of but usually not too bad if you go through IG or FB. I completed my journey not long ago. It was tough to stay on track. Sometimes I would forget to wear my aligners but I realized that as long as you get back on track quickly you are okay. The plastic is not bad in your mouth but I also brushed my teeth a lot during the 6 months that I had to wear my aligners. They recommend 22 hours a day but I probably did 20 on average. Sometimes it was nice to have them out for a while. Also, their whitening kit works well but it doesn’t last as long as they claim but it does work well. Overall, for the price I was very happy and no real complaints.
Helpful?Michael W.Littleton, Colorado2 years agoSpacingBottom Line: SDC works. Is it perfect? No. But, look at my results. For the price that I paid in comparison to what my Dentist quoted me, I can say that my teeth are straigher and whiter (free whitening kit). I wasn’t expecting movie star perfection and I think that if you are patient, have tempered-expectations, and are ready for the process mentally, you will be all good. My dentist was impressed after I finished my treatment. Hope this helps someone!
Helpful?Evan J.Arkansas3 years agoSpacingI LOVE my new smile! I have finished many months ago and my smile is still great! I am an aspiring actor and this has definitely helped me jumpstart my career! If you are self-conscious of your smile please change your life and get clear aligners! I am so much more confident. I have felt this is one of my best investments in myself for sure. Don’t listen to negativity.
My only complaint – the retainers cost $99 every six months which is a lot in my opinion.
Helpful?Shania C.Ohio3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI chose SmileDirectClub because of their reasonable pricing compared to traditional braces & from all of the good reviews I have read from others who have had success using SmileDirectClub. I’m halfway through my smile journey and they are already meeting my expectations for closing my gaps that I’ve been insecure about growing up. SmileDirectClubs messenger support is always open and the best way I personally like to get ahold of them with questions. I chose to have the scan done instead of doing impressions, I highly recommend going to the smile shop and having scans because they are so quick, easy and accurate. Just do plenty of research to make sure clear aligners are right for you before jumping in & good luck!
Helpful?Jacob R.NYC, NY1 year agoCrowdingSpacingUnderbiteThe initial part of the process with SmileDirectClub was not bad.. the impression kit was fairly easy and the shipping logistics were simple. The biggest problem in my opinion is the timeline given. I believe that it is at least twice as long as they estimate for most people. They just know that once you’re halfway through you’ll keep them on as long as needed, so I would just say don’t go off their timeline. Also, don’t expect any major changes.
Helpful?Izabela B.Grand Rapids, MI1 year agoSpacingCrossbiteMidlineIt has always bothered me how my jaw looked misaligned in pictures. I also have a very stubborn front tooth that tends to rotate. So far I have seen improvement with my teeth and I’m hopeful to have the problems fixed.
Helpful?Emily G.Memphis, TN3 years agoSpacingSo, the reason that I didnt give 5 stars is because they were really slow with processing my order and shipping my aligners. It took almost two months from my date for them to even ship my aligners. Because of this, my treatment went from 5 months to 7. Aside from that, I watched probably every YouTube video available, good and bad, beforehand. I met with my dentist who was willing to keep an eye on my teeth every 60 days. I finished last month and while there are some things I would still like to change just a little but overall this has been a really good experience for the results.
Helpful?Michael U.Golden Colorado3 years agoCrowdingSpacingOMG super happy with my smile from SDC…honestly don’t listen to the negativity!! The plan was great for me. I was on it for 6 months. It wasn’t too bad, sometimes I felt my teeth even got worst throughout the process but just trust your smile center and you will come out good! I would tell all of you considering it to just do it. Save up that cash and do it!! My last word of advice is to go see your dentist and get a permanent retainer after. It only costs another $200 for me but you will spend that in retainers in one year. That is a pro tip!!
Helpful?Heitor D.Marietta, Georgia2 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapI decided to use aligners because it was more affordable. I’ve always had a gap that I’ve been insecure about and I wanted to get rid of it. I went into the smile direct club office to get a 3D scan and everyone was super helpful. They were very friendly and even helped me figure out that my insurance helped with the cost. I was overall very satisfied.
Helpful?Alyssa G.New York, NY2 years agoCrowdingSpacingI had a great experience with this company. My box with everything included arrived within 2 weeks of ordering it as promised. I wore the retainers in total for about 5 months and I was able to see results. I mostly had overcrowding but also some spacing issues that it took care of. I changed to a new retainer either weekly or every 2 weeks. The first day I put them in they were tight but I made sure to do it at night so the worst of it would be when I was sleeping and by morning it was mostly better. One retainer did slightly cut into my gums but the kit included a file that I was able to use and file it down. This was a lot less expensive than what my dentist quoted me so is give it a try before you drop $5-6k.
Helpful?Clarissa O.Minnesota3 years agoCrowdingSpacingI did Smile direct for 7 months in total. 5 months to begin and 2 months of refinements afterwards. My dentist was impressed. My reasoning for only 4 stars is the fact that they have SLOW service and response time if you send them emails. My advice is that you just need to consult your DDS before hand. If you dont, and you spend all that money you might be upset if something goes wrong. Why take the risk? Just see your dentist and they will let you know if you are a good fit for SD. If not, dont do it anyway.
Helpful?Laura R.Athens, GA3 years agoSpacingSo I am in Month 4 out of 5. Let me start out with the worst part: The pain. I have been flying through Advil left and right to help with the soreness. I think that a lot of people can tolerate it but for me, it is pretty bad. I usually put my new aligners in before bed and take some melatonin and some Advil so I sleep well. Each new aligner makes your teeth really sore so be prepared for soft foods. Onto the good…okay so my teeth have a lot of progress! I already feel more confident! I paid a lot of this and I am glad it is working. If I can do it, so can you. Just be tough and you won’t regret it!
Helpful?Tori R.Ohio3 years agoSpacingSmile Direct Club has given me the chance at a smile I have only dreamed of. The insurance my family I have wouldn’t let me get braces since it was purely for cosmetics. I also chose SDC as it was WAY cheaper than paying for braces out of pocket, and faster.
My smile plan is five months. That’s it, 5 months for the smile of my dreams. I was always known as “the girl with the gap” in school and I couldn’t take it anymore. Their customer service was excellent and helped me with any questions I had. Within 3 months, I was seeing changes! I had my impression kit sent, then sent back in, and within weeks my aligners arrived. Quickly!! If you are trying to figure out what to do, I’ll help you: Smile Direct Club.
Helpful?Kevin D.Charlotte1 year agoCrowdingSpacingOverall, I did this to straighten my teeth. I chose SmileDirectClub because I knew people who already had done it. They have definitely met my expectations thus far because I have seen tangible progress. Customer service was great throughout the process. Nothing feedback-wise, but I would be cognizant of the fact that removing them to eat can be tricky sometimes, especially when going to work. Overall, though, I would definitely recommend SmileDirectClub.
Helpful?Merinda A.Idaho1 year agoSpacingTooth GapI decided to purchase aligners because I knew I did not want to have braces again. Since the aligners are clear I felt more confident. I chose this provider because I had a coupon. It was also very easy to sign up with this company. There is minimal discomfort and I feel like I’ve had results pretty fast. If I could give any advice it would be to just make sure you wear your aligner a lot!
Helpful?Ashleigh P.Hagerstown, MD1 year agoCrowdingSpacingOpen BiteI’ve had bad teeth for over ten years. I decided to get aligners because I was never happy with my smile and smile direct seemed the best option. I was so supported by smile direct through every step of the process. I was positively surprised by the treatment process and how easy it was! I say go for it smile direct is great!
Helpful?Richard R.Delaware2 years agoCrowdingSpacingSmile Direct Club has been nothing short of FANTASTIC for me. I honestly dont really have anything negative to say about Smile Direct Club, outside of the fact that their trays are not very well made. They do get the job done, but literally every one that I used had to be filed down because after a few hours they began to irritate my gums becuase of poorly cut edges. Outside of that, the aligners werent overly expensive, the staff was always helpful, and the treatment only lasted about 8 months for me. I may have had a lucky experience, but for the cost I think it is worth it to take the jump and try it out.
