SmileDirectClub claims their aligners can effectively correct most mild-to-moderate tooth gaps, but do their customer reviews back this up?
In most cases, yes! In fact, customers seeking to correct tooth gaps are among the happiest of all SDC customers, with the vast majority of the reviews leaning positive and cases resolving fairly quickly. According to those who were just addressing tooth gaps, the process is simple and delivers incredible results. But as with all types of alignment issues, SDC works best on minor gaps; the larger the gaps, the less likely they are to close completely, especially within the standard 4–6 month timeframe.
But don’t just take our word for it. Hear it directly from the customers by reading the reviews below!
Smile Prep offers readers a small financial incentive in exchange for their unbiased reviews. We require proof of purchase before accepting reviews, and all reviewers must have completed at least three months of aligner treatment. Filters: All Ratings, ToothGapResults: 1 through 23 out of 23 resultsAlicia H.Raleigh, NC3 years agoSpacingTooth GapI used SDC to fix a large front gap and some smaller gaps on my bottom teeth. Overall, I am satisfied and my teeth are way better than they were after a 5-month plan and 1 set of refinements. However, SDC is definitely not the quality that you’d expect from working with a traditional orthodontist.
The good:
– I chose SDC due to the cheaper price compared to Invisalign and braces. Convenient payment plans are available in addition to occasional discounts.
– The scans in the smile shop are painless and also kind of cool to look at.
– Packaging is great and aligners are well organized.
– You can keep asking for refinements until you’re satisfied, or until they say they can’t help anymore. I only had one set of refinements before I felt satisfied enough.
– With all of the extra brushing and flossing, my teeth have never been so white.
– My teeth were sensitive for the first few days of each aligner, but not unbearable. Enough where I wouldn’t want to chew on my front teeth but not enough to stop me from eating anything I wanted to.
– I ate way less. I kept thinking “is this worth the brushing and flossing?”The bad:
– Do NOT expect incredible customer service. I ended up with THREE pairs of free retainers due to their customer service miscommunications, including having an appointment at a Smile Shop when the building was closed. I honestly had the best luck with talking to their Twitter account rather than calling or emailing.
– You’ll need to invest in dental wax, Tylenol, and something to file your aligners with. Sometimes they’ll tear up your mouth.
– You do NOT have constant monitoring by your doctor. You have ONE 90-day check-in where you send in photos. It’s kind of up to you to decide whether you need to talk to SDC or your dentist if things aren’t right.
– Have your smile plan reviewed before you start! Luckily, I did not have problems before or after with my bite. However, I have seen SDC create smile plans resulting in terrible crossbites. Fixing bites is not their priority.
– The Smile Shop employees are VERY pushy. You don’t have to sign up at the shop, though they will definitely try to make you. I’d recommend waiting to receive your smile plan.Helpful?Eddie P.Roanoke, Virginia3 years agoSpacingTooth GapI chose Smile Direct Club because of the price and the fact that there was the option to just wear the aligners for 10 hours at night. This eliminated the problem of having to take them out and clean them every time you eat or drink. I have always had a gap between my front teeth that I was self-conscious about. The process of ordering them was very easy and customer support was always quick to answer any questions I had. I finished my aligners in September and since my teeth aren’t exactly as I had hoped (still a gap in the front), I contacted smile direct club and they are sending me some refinements (more aligners) to help me further close the gap in my front teeth. Hopefully this will do the trick!
Helpful?Alexa K.Sioux Falls, SD3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapOverbiteCrossbiteI chose smile direct because I was very insecure about my teeth, and insurance wouldn’t cover it. I went in for a scan and they gave me whitening gel, a light, and lip balm. Loved the lip balm! The wait took a while, even though I had an appointment. I wanted to fix my front gap. Customer support has been great. Easiest to reach out to on messenger. Love my results, but here’s some cons : they crack easy, you have to file down or use dental wax because it cut my tongue and cheeks up to the point where I couldn’t eat . They shift back very quickly, so make sure u always wear them.
Advice if u are looking to try SDC: always keep ur previous aligners. I’ve had to go weeks without them multiple times due to getting chewed up by my dog and cracks. The shipping is expected to take over a month for a new retainer, or aligner. Also, if you have Facebook I recommend joining a smile direct club members group, it helped me a lot with any problems or questions.
Helpful?Eric A.Colorado2 years agoSpacingTooth GapBasically I want to say that these are painful. The worst part about them is the pain and cleaning them. I am a germophobe and I swear it grosses me out to look at them after I take them out. But if you can get through the pain and the grossness you can have some great results!! I have been at it for a while, because I had to take a break due to a loss in the family and my mental health but I am back on the train now. I had to go back a few aligners because my teeth shifted back. My dentist is happy with my progress and said that I will need a permanent retainer after this is over. I will be happy to pay for it because I dont want this work to go for nothing. Keep in mind my photos arent final (:
Helpful?Ella W.Joppa, Maryland1 year agoSpacingTooth GapI decided to get aligners because I was insecure about the gap between my two front teeth. Honestly, what made me choose Smile Direct Club is because they had an ongoing promotion! Plus they had options for overnight aligners, since all day ones were NOT for me. I was a little surprised by how much the first night hurt, but thankfully the pain eased quickly! Nowadays, I’m just surprised by how fast it goes! I’m already halfway done my treatment and it feels like I just started. If there’s any advice I’d give, it’s not to be put off by the initial discomfort! It passes quickly, and it’s totally worth it. Already, I see a world of difference, and my confidence has definitely improved. I’d definitely recommend!
Helpful?Salina S.Leming1 year agoTooth GapI purchased aligners because I have always wanted a straighter smile. I chose Smiledirect Club because I would be able to basically do it all myself and not have to worry about making routine appointments at an office. I am very happy with this company and my results. My goal was to correct the gape in between my two front teeth. I feel that I was completely supported by this company and they were very helpful even when my first teeth impressions weren’t perfect they happily sent me another kit to redo them for free. I did need to send in progress photos so that the orthodontist had an idea of how I was doing and if we needed to make any changes and luckily they did this through email so it was much easier and faster than going to an actual office. I would greatly recommend Smiledirect Club because I am very happy with my results and the process overall was very simple and easy to understand which made it so much better.
Helpful?Jason L.Dallas, TX3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapIf you are on the fence about this…hop down and head over to make it happen! Is it painful, yes. Is it hard to wear them all the time, yes. Is it risky, yes. But, if you are like me and you think that you could benefit from some minor corrections, then go for it! If you have a LOT of moving to do, you probably need to see a regular orthodontist and get braces. For the minor stuff, this is the way to go! Join a group and ask questions! I did have to have refinements, but seriously just relax and do this. Oh, also if you are one of those absolute perfectionists…go see an orthodontist. This is not for you. This is for people with a “C” smile who want to go to a “B+” or maybe “A-” if you are lucky.
Helpful?David B.Durham, NC3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI was always scared to smile and I always had a low self esteem so I decided to fix my teeth with the cheapest way possible which ended up being smile direct club. When I first went in for the scan they seemed very pushy for me to start quickly as all I was very suspicious but I went along with them. My teeth hurt which I would expect since my teeth were being moved around. 4 months in out of my total 6 month treatment I started seeing major changes. I am now done with treatment and couldn’t be anymore happier. I can finally smile and feel confident in my own skin. I did have to do a 2 months of refinements but it was all worth it.
Helpful?Kevin E.Maine3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapSmile Direct Club is a great company with friendly staff. Sometimes they can be hard to get a hold of but usually not too bad if you go through IG or FB. I completed my journey not long ago. It was tough to stay on track. Sometimes I would forget to wear my aligners but I realized that as long as you get back on track quickly you are okay. The plastic is not bad in your mouth but I also brushed my teeth a lot during the 6 months that I had to wear my aligners. They recommend 22 hours a day but I probably did 20 on average. Sometimes it was nice to have them out for a while. Also, their whitening kit works well but it doesn’t last as long as they claim but it does work well. Overall, for the price I was very happy and no real complaints.
Helpful?Victoria F.Chicago1 year agoTooth GapOverbiteI really liked my journey so far. It is uncomfortable changing the aligners and sometimes a lot to handle. However the results have been worth the temporary discomfort. I am excited to finish the journey. On my second set currently.
Helpful?Kyara L.Mobile, AL3 years agoTooth GapI chose this company, Smile direct because they were cheap and affordable for a college student. This company went above and beyond with correcting my brand new smile. Although some aligners were painful I pushed through the pain to get the great smile I was looking for without the long wait traditional braces have. Because of the pandemic I had to do an impression kit at home but surprisingly it was fairly easily to follow. If you are considering this company I highly recommend it for someone who can’t quite afford braces but would like to correct their smile.
Helpful?Zuri C.United States3 years agoTooth GapMidlineI chose this company because it was really affordable and had great reviews. The whole process was Super easy and convenient. Any time there was a problem, the FB messenger customer service was superb and reached back out to me in a very fast manner.
So far SDC has met my expectations and I thankfully have not had any problems come so far. The impression kit was a little tricky and I do recommend the teeth scan a lot more cause it gets really in-depth of what the teeth look like without any misinterpretation. I would say if you’re looking for a simple fix that isn’t too drastic, to go for it! It’s worth the price of not getting braces.
Helpful?Shania C.Ohio3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI chose SmileDirectClub because of their reasonable pricing compared to traditional braces & from all of the good reviews I have read from others who have had success using SmileDirectClub. I’m halfway through my smile journey and they are already meeting my expectations for closing my gaps that I’ve been insecure about growing up. SmileDirectClubs messenger support is always open and the best way I personally like to get ahold of them with questions. I chose to have the scan done instead of doing impressions, I highly recommend going to the smile shop and having scans because they are so quick, easy and accurate. Just do plenty of research to make sure clear aligners are right for you before jumping in & good luck!
Helpful?Heitor D.Marietta, Georgia2 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapI decided to use aligners because it was more affordable. I’ve always had a gap that I’ve been insecure about and I wanted to get rid of it. I went into the smile direct club office to get a 3D scan and everyone was super helpful. They were very friendly and even helped me figure out that my insurance helped with the cost. I was overall very satisfied.
Helpful?Merinda A.Idaho1 year agoSpacingTooth GapI decided to purchase aligners because I knew I did not want to have braces again. Since the aligners are clear I felt more confident. I chose this provider because I had a coupon. It was also very easy to sign up with this company. There is minimal discomfort and I feel like I’ve had results pretty fast. If I could give any advice it would be to just make sure you wear your aligner a lot!
Helpful?Tim B.Knoxville, TN3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOne of the best things about Smile Direct is their cost. Compared to the competitors, this is why I chose them. I did a TON of research before I started so I was prepared for all of the “what ifs” that could arise. Everything was super straight forward in the process from beginning to end. I am so glad I spent those hours researching the process. Up until now, I really didn’t have any confidence in my smile. After 6 months of treatment plus 4 more of refinements, my smile is vastly improved. I don’t have any real complaints outside of the fact that I had to have refinements. If you have done your research you will see this is common. In fact, a lot of people have to do refinements with traditional braces too. It is not super uncommon.
Helpful?Yvette T.Oakland3 years agoSpacingTooth GapThis was a tough experience but I say go for it. I had a lot of issues with pain and I ended up taking a LOT of tylenol and asprin for headaches and stuff but at the end I was happy. The whitening kit I saved for the end for a “final result” and wow it works great and didnt make my teeth sensitive. the only bad part was really the pain from the new aligners when I had to switch them up. But really works great, 2 thumbs up!
Helpful?Justin M.Farmingville3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI saw an opportunity online for a sale and took advantage of it. And though it was occasionally and uncomfortable journey it was worth it to get my teeth straightened in just 4 months.
Helpful?Jamie S.WV3 years agoTooth GapOverjetI did the impression kit at home and with following directions, it was easy. While the wait for the 3D plan to be developed and the aligners to be shipped took forever, I was pleased with my 6-month plan. My teeth are not only straighter but they are whiter too. Customer service was easy through Facebook messenger and never had any issues. I would 100% recommend to a friend as it has changed my life and I can smile again!
Helpful?Corey Q.Kentucky3 years agoSpacingTooth GapI chose SmileDirectClub because of the lifelong front gap I had. I have wanted to get rid of it all of my life. It was so easy with them, from the moment I walked into one of their stores and when I received the aligners. I have recommended SmileDirectClub to everyone that has asked.
Helpful?Ahzia C.Waterbury, CT2 years agoTooth GapMy teeth where not horrible to begin with, I had braces in the past. Unfortunately like many, I didn’t wear my retainer and gradually started to see my gap forming once again. SmileDirect not only is EXTREMELY easy to keep up with, my teeth are so much brighter/whiter after using their complementary whitening system. I can’t speak for those that had seriously messed up teeth, but at least for me, I’m loving the results. I cannot wait to see my finished product! 10/10
Helpful?Kendra B.Kilgore, TX3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI went to a traditional dentist and was told adult braces would cost about 6000 dollars. After having 2 little ones that just wasn’t in our budget. I was mainly just looking for my front teeth to be straightened and that’s it, to make my smile better. That’s when I found out about the SmileDirectClub. I decided to give at-home impression kit a try. I had to submit 2 to get it right. After that, it was smooth sailing. I had a 6-month plan for about 2000 dollars and have been done for about 1 year now. I wear my retainers at night and have been very happy with my results. I would recommend it.
Helpful?Natalia N.Norfolk1 year agoSpacingTooth GapI wanted to fix a small spacing issue on my upper teeth. Given the fact that this was a minor cosmetic issue that would not have any funcional implications, I opted to try this one out as opposed to paying (3000-7000) dollars for invisalign, which according to many reviews should be the safest option for a more complex case.
To start out, I ordered the at home impression kit, which came incomplete so I couldn’t send in my impressions, then had to find a studio where they would do the scan (that was a one hour drive from my home) it went well, everyone was super friendly and helpful and I made it very clear that I wanted to get clear aligners, ONLY on my upper teeth. She said there was no problem and I should wait for the aligners to arrive on the mail to start my treatment. Once I got them I realized they designed a plan to work on both my upper and lower teeth so I called them and asked, can I just wear the upper ones? They said absolutely not as the plan was meant to work on my upper and lower teeth simultaneously and only using the upper one would result in modification of my bite. So I said, this is not what I asked for, can you please fix it? once again they asked me to do a new scan. Went in, got it… and this is when most of the drama started, I would call to ask why they hadn’t shipped my aligners and there response was, we will connect you with the clinical team, they would put me on hold for a long time, put me with a different person every time and I would have to tell them the whole story, they would say, well, we just need your ok to send you your upper and lower aligners, to which I replied: No, I requested only upper ones… then they said oh I am sorry, you are correct, we will fix this and contact you as soon as we get your plan redesign. They never called, it was me who called two weeks in a row, reliving the same call where it wasn’t clear what had happened and I had to explain over and over again what I was requesting. One day, I was just fed up with the poor communication/customer service, and I just called to get my money back. Once I said that some manager magically said oh yes, we have your upper teeth plan ready and set to go, we just need you to give us the ok. From then on, I received my plan, my treatment, and everything went pretty smooth. The starting kit was very complete, the retainers were not painful to wear (as I remember braces hurt so bad…) and after four months, I was all set with my new smile. I want to say the quality of the product was great but the disconnection between their clinical team and their customer services was just awful.
