SmileDirectClub claims that their aligners can correct mild cases of overbite, but do their customer testimonials support this?
For the most part, they do — but there are some notable exceptions where perhaps SDC took on cases that were actually beyond their scope. Multiple customers stated that they would recommend SmileDirectClub, but only if your overbite is very mild; for those with significant protrusions, results were not always great. Many customers who just needed a little help stated that they loved their results and have zero regrets.
But there’s no need to take our word for it — check out the authentic reviews below from customers who used SDC to treat overbite.
Smile Prep offers readers a small financial incentive in exchange for their unbiased reviews. We require proof of purchase before accepting reviews, and all reviewers must have completed at least three months of aligner treatment. The aligners were cheaper than invisalign as well and Im pretty sure that SmileDirectClub used to be owned by the same company as Invisalign so I thought why not???
As I mentioned earlier, I had crowding, an overbite, and two teeth on the top that were jetted out. I have heard of a lot of people being denied because there was too much work to be done which is what I was pretty sure was going to happen to me. But I got approved in June 2019 and was super excited! I waited a little less than 2 weeks after I got my first initial scan to get my aligners. I paid upfront in full so I believe I paid about 2000. The good thing about this was I was reimbursed by my insurance for pretty much half of it! Cheap does not always mean good though which I knew but figured why not give it a try?
So I get my aligners and everything goes well until December when I am supposed to be done. My teeth were not as straight as they were projected to be so had to go through the process of getting refinements. So they had to scan my mouth again and approve the refinements.
So I get more aligners for I believe three or four months and only about half of them fit. I call again and I’m told to just continue trying to fit them on and call back if I need more. So I obviously had to call back and get more. Those fit thank goodness, so when I was done with this over the summer (so I’ve been doing this 6 months longer than normal) I was again not satisfied and got yet another refinement. These didn’t fit either so I had to wear the same aligners for two months and they were cracked everywhere. I wore my aligners about 22 hours a day and my bottom tooth was still moving and would not stay still.
So in the last picture I included, you can see my gum is receding and I now need surgery. Fast forward to September 2020, I call again because my aligners were done and I needed more. They sent me more and none of them fit. Sent me more and those fit well. Fast forward to early 2021, I’m still wearing these aligners and I called to get more and none of them fit after the first two weeks. So I told them if these do not fit, I’m going to call and say I am done and to see if they can send me retainers and be done with it.
Overall, you can see my teeth are definitely straighter than they were, but not exactly because my teeth need the shaping and filing as well to keep my bottom teeth straight as they still don’t have enough room. I feel as if I should have been rejected because my teeth were so crooked but they wanted me money so they said okay anyway 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️ so I would definitely recommend smiledirectclub if you have VERY MILD TO LITTLE work that has to be done. If not PLEASE spend the extra 2,000 to do Invisalign and save yourself time and money in the long run.
Helpful?Alexa K.Sioux Falls, SD3 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapOverbiteCrossbiteI chose smile direct because I was very insecure about my teeth, and insurance wouldn’t cover it. I went in for a scan and they gave me whitening gel, a light, and lip balm. Loved the lip balm! The wait took a while, even though I had an appointment. I wanted to fix my front gap. Customer support has been great. Easiest to reach out to on messenger. Love my results, but here’s some cons : they crack easy, you have to file down or use dental wax because it cut my tongue and cheeks up to the point where I couldn’t eat . They shift back very quickly, so make sure u always wear them.
Advice if u are looking to try SDC: always keep ur previous aligners. I’ve had to go weeks without them multiple times due to getting chewed up by my dog and cracks. The shipping is expected to take over a month for a new retainer, or aligner. Also, if you have Facebook I recommend joining a smile direct club members group, it helped me a lot with any problems or questions.
Helpful?Ashley R.Springfield, OH1 year agoCrowdingSnaggletoothOverbiteI chose SmileDirectClub because a girl I went to school with posted her results and said she had a good experience. I had mild teeth crowding and a slight overbite that I wanted to correct. I had braces as a kid but over the years by teeth had become crooked again. I finished the treatment and all seemed well. My teeth were straight. The whole process was mildly painful but nothing that wasn’t to be expected. I thought all was good…..until I went for my teeth cleaning with my dentist. He immediately knew I had used an aligner program without me even mentioning it. He said I have “Teeth Occlusion” and showed how my top teeth and bottom teeth no longer touch. I will need to monitor my bottom teeth now for the occlusion and may one day need surgery to repair it. I will also need to get braces again to fix my teeth not touching. I reached out to SmileDirect asking for a refund and they gave me the run around. Said “Since my teeth are straight within the time frame predicted I am not eligible for a refund”. They said they would reevaluate if I can provide all my dental records from before treatment and if my dentist will write a letter stating all of my concerns are solely based on the aligners. I am in the process of getting this information now. The way they treated me and the process that I was immediately put into once I made the compliant tells me this is a common thing they deal with and they have a policy/procedure in place. If I could go back I would spend the extra money to go to a true orthodontist.
Helpful?Alex B.Queens, NY3 years agoSnaggletoothOverbiteOverjetI am leaving 3 stars because I have had a pretty bad experience compared to my results. For all of the headache and pain of the delays and the other issues that I had with Smile Direct I would say that in the end, I would have been happy just having the whitening because the movement for me really isn’t that dramatic… Pain was not too bad. Get some melatonin or something if you have trouble sleeping.
Pro Tip: Join a support group on Facebook because they will have all the info you need.
Pros: Aligners are not that painful, the whitening kit works well, the facilities and technology is pretty neat.
Cons: The cost, the results were not super life changing, the aligner quality, and the SLOW shipping, responses, and results.
Helpful?Angel G.Lacey, WA1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteI wanted to straighten my teeth whether it was braces or aligners, whatever got the job done and cost effective. Aligners seemed the route to go to and smile direct club was one of the potentially clients I was looking at. I couldn’t pass on smile directs club savings and cost with insurance, A little over $600 to get my teeth straighten out! I’ve been more than pleased, straightened out teeth, whiter teeths, and cleaner mouth hygiene . Smile direct club was easy and made working with them a pleasure.
Helpful?Hannah B.Charlotte, NC2 years agoSpacingOverbiteDecided to go with SmileDirect due to price. My orthodontist quoted me nearly $2,500 more for only braces on the top. Halfway through my treatment a set of aligners didn’t fit. Not having the previous set I had to get my teeth scanned again.
Keep in mind they take about a month to get shipped. This led to my teeth fully shifting back and making my 4 month journey almost 9 months. The aligners are so thick that they messed up my bite (I now have a permanent 1 1/2 cm. open bite). The thickness also resulted in my jaw pooping every time I open and close thankfully it don’t hurt.
All in all the process wasn’t too painful but you never even meet a dental professional absolutely seems like a pyramid scheme.
Helpful?Angel G.Olympia, WA1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteMy teeth were never bad , I would have ppl compliment my smile. Sadly my teeth were a little crowded on the bottom and I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older that the crowding only seems to be getting worse. So I have always had the idea of getting my teeth straighten out but never pursued forward with that idea because of cost I would have to pay. With covid and facemask I thought it was the perfect time to take action so I did a little homework, and came to the conclusion that braces and invisalign was too expensive. And settled with smile direct club, which I ended up paying $680 with insurance and received a $50 gift card as well. I have now completed my 4 month journey and I have really enjoyed my results for the cost I paid, I can’t complain about that. I do feel like my teeth could be even more straightened out. I’ll see if I can have smile direct club work on my smile a little more. But i have enjoyed the transformation of my teeth, I’ll definitely get more compliments on smile.
Helpful?David B.Durham, NC3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI was always scared to smile and I always had a low self esteem so I decided to fix my teeth with the cheapest way possible which ended up being smile direct club. When I first went in for the scan they seemed very pushy for me to start quickly as all I was very suspicious but I went along with them. My teeth hurt which I would expect since my teeth were being moved around. 4 months in out of my total 6 month treatment I started seeing major changes. I am now done with treatment and couldn’t be anymore happier. I can finally smile and feel confident in my own skin. I did have to do a 2 months of refinements but it was all worth it.
Helpful?Kari J.Grand Rapids, MI3 years agoCrowdingOverbiteI wanted to try this company because getting Invisalign was too expensive. I did the teeth kit and did 9 months of treatment, to which I found I needed refinements so I went and did the teeth scan which was much better than the kit. It was a lot more precise and the aligners fit my teeth better. All my issues were corrected and I was extremely happy with the outcome. I had straight teeth and was doing great until it was around my last month’s set and my aligners started to not fit my teeth anymore. It took sdc two months to get new aligners to me which by that point my teeth shifted back and those aligners didn’t fit anymore. I had to redo the scan again and get a new full treatment plan which is 6 months. I have been doing this for over two years now and hoping for a better outcome with their customer service and getting the aligners shipped out much quicker.
Helpful?Kayce A.Orlando, FL3 years agoOverbiteSmile Direct has been LIFECHANGING for me. Hands down, the best decision I have made for confidence in my life. I completed my treatment over the course of one year, initially a 5-month plan with two 3 month refinements afterward.
I wouldn’t recommend their retainers…my dentist put in a permanent retainer for $335 top and bottom. I would ask your ortho or dentist about this after you finish or else you will be paying $99 every six months for life.
Everyone has different opinions and results, but I would just say that if you are on the fence, go for it. It is a great program if you actually follow it and stay tough and true to the plan!!
Helpful?Jayne-Marie V.Langhorne, PA3 years agoCrowdingOverbiteUnderbiteAfter having braces for about 10 years off and on and then not wearing my retainer I finally was ready to make a change. I chose smile direct club because it was all online without any annoying office visits. I did the impression kit, everything was approved. I received my aligners within 4-6 weeks. And started the process immediately. Each week I had to cut off one molar because during the shipping process I had a root canal and crown put on. The aligner didn’t fit it. But I was approved to cut it down off that last molar since it didn’t affect it at all. I recommend smile direct club to anyone who asks.
Helpful?Victoria F.Chicago1 year agoTooth GapOverbiteI really liked my journey so far. It is uncomfortable changing the aligners and sometimes a lot to handle. However the results have been worth the temporary discomfort. I am excited to finish the journey. On my second set currently.
Helpful?Rachel M.Connecticut1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteSmile Club Direct offered competitive pricing and for myself, as a single mom with lack luster health insurance, budget was important. The in person scan was easy and simple and the staff were very informative and answered any questions I had. The customer service has been great and all of retainers arrived clearly labeled and ready to go. They are so easy to put in and remove and I was able to see the difference in just a few months. I’m really happy that I decided to do something for me and smile club direct was the best choice.
Helpful?Shania C.Ohio3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI chose SmileDirectClub because of their reasonable pricing compared to traditional braces & from all of the good reviews I have read from others who have had success using SmileDirectClub. I’m halfway through my smile journey and they are already meeting my expectations for closing my gaps that I’ve been insecure about growing up. SmileDirectClubs messenger support is always open and the best way I personally like to get ahold of them with questions. I chose to have the scan done instead of doing impressions, I highly recommend going to the smile shop and having scans because they are so quick, easy and accurate. Just do plenty of research to make sure clear aligners are right for you before jumping in & good luck!
Helpful?Taylor M.Westbrook, CT3 years agoCrowdingOverbiteAlong my Smile Direct Club journey, I’ve found it to be easy, affordable, and convenient! I’m not even done with my journey yet, and my teeth have come so far. The customer service has been wonderful and answer any questions that I may have. My only regret is not doing it sooner!
Helpful?Davina L.Fredericksburg, VA1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteI decided to go with smiles direct club because they were cheaper than Invisalign. The customer support hasn’t been that great. I’ve had multiple issues and they have yet to address those concerns. If you only need a top or bottom aligner, you will be forced to pay the same price as if you had both sets. The impression kit was simple to use and may have been the best part of the entire experience. I can’t honestly recommend them to other people because I haven’t had a good experience with them.
Helpful?Mary J.Covington2 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothOverbiteMidlineI have only been on the transformation for 3 months, out of a 7 month journey but I can already see movement. The staff at smile direct have always been responsive and helpful. I was only approved for upper movement until my gums were corrected on my lower jaw which is in progress. The cost for quality of product and service is worth the money!
Helpful?Alyssa G.New York, NY2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteI’ve been wearing the aligners for a little over 4 months now and I’ve already seen results. I mainly got them to fix some overcrowding on my bottom teeth. I didn’t want to spend the 6k that my dentist was going to charge me so this was a great alternative. The process has been very easy. I went into smile direct before I ordered them and had a 3D scan – the guy did a wonderful job.
They sent me all the aligners shortly after and I am using their account to track my progress and reminders for when the change the aligners. Some are weekly and some are for 2 weeks. I recommend you get a get the tablets to clean them. You can find them at any drug store or a target. The only issue I had was 1 or 2 of the retainers cut into my guns but they send you a file with your kit and I was able to use that to fix the problem.
Helpful?Justin M.Farmingville2 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI saw an opportunity online for a sale and took advantage of it. And though it was occasionally and uncomfortable journey it was worth it to get my teeth straightened in just 4 months.
Helpful?Daniel H.United States3 years agoOverbiteWould not recommend SDC. They only realign the first 6 front teeth, and can cause permanent damage to your roots. They overcharge for tiny movements that do not even make your teeth generally straight. They cause black triangles as well. They do not compensate to get the black triangles addressed.
Helpful?Melissa B.Syracuse, NY2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteI started with smiledirect and did the impression kit. They sent me my clear aligners quickly. I choose the night program. When I went to place them in the first night they were not correct. I had to travel from Syracuse to Albany 2.5 hours to get a digital scan. When they came for the second time they fit correctly. Hopefully the rest of the journey goes smoothly.
Helpful?DesaRae J.Montana2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteAfter tons of research, I decided to go with Smile Direct Club and it was the best decision! I had crowding and I never liked my smile. I got an at home impression kit and it worked great for me! Not completely finished with my treatment yet but the results are amazing!
Helpful?Kelsey J.Orlando, FL3 years agoCrowdingOverbiteThey over all straighten my teeth, but left my bite off. I went to the dentist to have it aligned with Invisalign.
Helpful?Kalie M.Oviedo, FL2 years agoSpacingOverbiteI chose this company after finding them on Instagram from an add. They far exceeded my expectations. I have a gap in my front teeth and wanted it to close before starting my career. Customer service is great, always. I had a teeth scan done at a location. Only two months in and the gap is almost gone completely!
Helpful?Heaven P.Tecumseh, OK3 years agoOverbiteBest choice ever made! I’m only in aligner 6 and already see a difference.
Helpful?Kendra B.Kilgore, TX3 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI went to a traditional dentist and was told adult braces would cost about 6000 dollars. After having 2 little ones that just wasn’t in our budget. I was mainly just looking for my front teeth to be straightened and that’s it, to make my smile better. That’s when I found out about the SmileDirectClub. I decided to give at-home impression kit a try. I had to submit 2 to get it right. After that, it was smooth sailing. I had a 6-month plan for about 2000 dollars and have been done for about 1 year now. I wear my retainers at night and have been very happy with my results. I would recommend it.

Helpful?Jamie H.Milwaukee, WI1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteI wanted to try SmileDirectClub because I heard they were an inexpensive way to correct teeth alignment from a friend who used it. I had already had braces but my teeth went back to their original position. I had a tooth on the bottom front that stuck out and my top two teeth weren’t aligned correctly. I was treated great by the people who work there when I went in to get my initial tooth scan. They were friendly and helpful. The only issue was that my front bottom tooth still stuck out a little bit after the full treatment but I contacted them and they sent another two sets of custom aligners free of charge to correct the issue. I would definitely use SmileDirectClub again and recommend them to anyone who wants to fix their teeth on a budget.
Helpful?Tiffany B.Amelia, Virginia1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteI got smile direct club because I was not confident with my teeth. My smile held me back alot in life, I chose this company because it was affordable. I herd good and bad about the company but overall my experience has been fairly well.
Helpful?Whitney P.Moncks Corner, SC1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteI’ve always wanted my teeth fixed just never got around to it. I kept seeing SDC ads and I had always wanted to do it so I did. The best decision I’ve made. These aligners are so easy to use. I hardly ever have pain when switching to my next set. I always switch at night because if there is pain I’ll sleep through it! I’m mad I didn’t do it sooner!
