SmileDirectClub claims their aligners can address mild-to-moderate issues with crowding and spacing — but does the customer experience support this?
On the whole, yes! Customers who went with SDC to treat crowding love the way their aligners made solid corrections to their upper arch without breaking the bank. While the majority did state that results aren’t perfect — “This is for people with a “C” smile who want to go to a “B+” or maybe “A-” if you are lucky,” as one reviewer said — they did get a big self-esteem boost from their results.
But you don’t need to take our word for it. Check out the authentic customer reviews below.
Smile Prep offers readers a small financial incentive in exchange for their unbiased reviews. So far I am on Aligner 9, I have 3 more to go until I am finished treatment. The process has been perfect, no issues at all, the pain was minimal and every Aligner fit perfectly.
My teeth are so much straighter. I am very happy with the outcome! The only thing I have to complain about is it would be nice if the employees communicated better with each other, every time you have a question you have to speak to a different person each time and keep re-explaining your situation, they should either assign one employee to each case or have better communication between each other. Other than that I am happy with the outcome so far and have no complaints about the treatment, the process was very fast, 4 months! Hardly any people noticed I was actually wearing aligners!
Helpful?Ester K.Raleigh, NC2 years agoCrowdingI was always self conscious of my smile so I decided to invest in smiledirect. I thought it was affordable with a short treatment time. So far I can definitely see changes. I am excited to see the end results. I did feel like there wasn’t much communication during the process.
Helpful?Rachel M.Connecticut2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteSmile Club Direct offered competitive pricing and for myself, as a single mom with lack luster health insurance, budget was important. The in person scan was easy and simple and the staff were very informative and answered any questions I had. The customer service has been great and all of retainers arrived clearly labeled and ready to go. They are so easy to put in and remove and I was able to see the difference in just a few months. I’m really happy that I decided to do something for me and smile club direct was the best choice.
Helpful?Carolyn M.Williamsburg, VA2 years agoCrowdingI had braces as a kid but stopped wearing my retainers in my 20s. I knew how my teeth were supposed to look and recognized that crowding that was taking place. Because it was a “simple” fix, I felt comfortable using SDC and my local dentist was supportive of my choice. Due to the hands-off nature of this type of orthodontic process, I don’t know if I’d recommend it for more complicated treatments, but it was the perfect choice for me. It has been 5+ years since I did it and I am still thrilled with the results!
Helpful?Jacob R.NYC, NY2 years agoCrowdingSpacingUnderbiteThe initial part of the process with SmileDirectClub was not bad.. the impression kit was fairly easy and the shipping logistics were simple. The biggest problem in my opinion is the timeline given. I believe that it is at least twice as long as they estimate for most people. They just know that once you’re halfway through you’ll keep them on as long as needed, so I would just say don’t go off their timeline. Also, don’t expect any major changes.

It wasn’t too bad, sometimes I felt my teeth even got worst throughout the process but just trust your smile center and you will come out good! I would tell all of you considering it to just do it. Save up that cash and do it!! My last word of advice is to go see your dentist and get a permanent retainer after. It only costs another $200 for me but you will spend that in retainers in one year. That is a pro tip!!
Helpful?Sophia L.Calgary, Canada3 years agoCrowdingMidlineI chose this company because it was cheaper than other clear aligner companies (Invisalign), but still had a lot of reviews/customers. While some of the reviewers’ results were bad, my results were okay (the aligners did make my teeth straighter), however, I did experience significant gum reduction. Customer service response time via phone and email were fairly reasonable (within 1-2 weeks for email). I went in for an in-person scan, they provided lip balm, and teeth whitener (did not really work), and I had to provide payment information. Overall, not a bad experience, however, there are consequences with gum reduction and teeth pain. Would proceed with caution based on initial teeth conditions.

Helpful?Taylor M.Westbrook, CT3 years agoCrowdingOverbiteAlong my Smile Direct Club journey, I’ve found it to be easy, affordable, and convenient! I’m not even done with my journey yet, and my teeth have come so far. The customer service has been wonderful and answer any questions that I may have. My only regret is not doing it sooner!
Helpful?Adonis S.Tucson, Arizona1 year agoCrowdingSmile Direct Club was amazing during the process. They offered wonderful support when I needed it, and they were thorough and consistent. The aligner quality was great, I never had one snap or break. Overall 10/10, would definitely recommend.
Helpful?John M.New York1 year agoCrowdingMy primary concerns were my upper left tooth being slightly curved outward and lower molar sitting lower than my other teeth. I have lost track of the number of revisions I have had but, needless to say, I am awaiting for another to arrive. It’s been a minimum of 10 revisions, at this point. Smile Direct becomes less and less responsive with each revisions, requiring a significant amount of time to make the devices and get them out to me. I honestly cannot say how much longer this will take but I anticipate many years at the rate we are going. I am very disappointed with the entire process. There has been progress BUT the original “six month” time estimate was not even close to reality.
Helpful?Heitor D.Marietta, Georgia2 years agoCrowdingSpacingTooth GapI decided to use aligners because it was more affordable. I’ve always had a gap that I’ve been insecure about and I wanted to get rid of it. I went into the smile direct club office to get a 3D scan and everyone was super helpful. They were very friendly and even helped me figure out that my insurance helped with the cost. I was overall very satisfied.
Helpful?Melanie K.Pompano Beach3 years agoCrowdingI had a horrible experience with Smiledirectclub. The company used deceptive tactics to get my money while knowing they were unable to correct my problem. If you hire this company, get confirmation about what exactly you are being charged for before agreeing to pay, opt out of fast track shipping, and review what you will be sent to avoid the headaches I have had to endure…
I wanted to correct the crowding in my lower teeth, so I ordered the impression kit, submitted my impressions and pics and filled out a form explaining that my lower teeth were getting increasingly crowded and that I wished to correct it. I was told their “dental professionals” had “reviewed and approved my photos.” Excited to get my teeth fixed, I went ahead and agreed to pay the $1800 in full. During this payment process, by not taking steps to opt out of “fast track shipping”, I apparently agreed to waive finding out what service they would actually be providing and what my “new smile” would look like.
Some time later I got a message saying my new smile was ready and the aligners were preparing to ship. Excited to see my new smile, I logged in only to find my problem teeth completely unaltered. Confused, I contacted customer service, and was told sorry, we cannot fix the crowding in your lower teeth. In total confusion I was like what??? What did you charge me for? What are you shipping me?? They explained I would be getting aligners for my top (straight) teeth. Outraged I said NO I don’t want aligners for my straight teeth! Refund my money immediately!! The service rep apologized that I wasn’t informed about the fact they could not fix my actual problem, assured me everything would be ok and said she was assigning an account representative who would take care of it.
A few days later I received a box from them. Again, I contacted them saying WHAT ARE YOU DOING? I WANT MY MONEY BACK! I was told I needed to send back their package with insured shipping through UPS or FedEx in order to receive a refund. Further infuriated but eagerly wanting to be done with this horrible company I said fine provide me a shipping label. My account rep replied with this: ” If you do wish to cancel you can return the unused aligners for a full refund per our policy. However, we do not provide return shipping on aligners.” and “You did sign the FastTrack form which we have on file from 2/3/2021 stating that you wish to pay the full amount and provided the card information for us to do so. This form also states once a plan is approved and completed to send the aligners to you right away, which we did. If you do wish to receive a copy of this form please do let me know and I can request it be sent to you.”
In other words, Smiledirectclub ignored my initial signup notes, deceived me into believing they could correct my problem, tricked me into waiving my rights to understand what service I would be receiving before getting the aligners and unknowingly had me agree to pay for shipping back aligners they knew I would have no use for. I spent over a week trying to get a rational resolution but kept getting the same standard template reply emails from the company reps.
Smiledirectclub knew they would not be providing me the service I signed up for and paid for, or any valuable service for that matter, and still decided to run my credit card. There is nothing innocent or accidental about the way this service is set up to scam people into believing they are getting their teeth fixed when they may receive half or less service while being charged full price and then punished when they try to get out of the bad situation.
I reported my experience to the BBB and TN Consumer Affairs. 3 hours after the BBB presented my case to Smiledirectclub I received a FedEx return shipping label in my email, so I am now sending the aligners back and expecting a refund.
My whole experience with this company was very disappointing, aggravating, and tedious. I hope other people stand up to their tactics so they will be forced to adopt honest business practices.
Helpful?Kalie L.Phoenix, AZ2 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothCrossbiteI had braces when I was younger and sadly I did not listen to my parents and they said I should wear my aligners. Because of this I ended up getting a crossbite on my bottom teeth and one of them started to push back. I was super self-conscious about my smile and that’s when I started to research all the aligners out there. I went with smile direct because they were affordable and I had a friend who had great things to say about her experience. I’m almost done with my treatment and I can say I’m absolutely in love. They have 24/7 customer support and an app that shows you what your smile will look like at the end. I absolutely love them!
Helpful?Oleg P.Chicago2 years agoCrowdingIt went smoothly. I visited their cabinet to make my 3d scan and got a treatment plan in less then 1 week I think. The treatment was for longer than expected but I like the results. Liked little perks as free whitening. 5 stars.
Helpful?Mary J.Covington3 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothOverbiteMidlineI have only been on the transformation for 3 months, out of a 7 month journey but I can already see movement. The staff at smile direct have always been responsive and helpful. I was only approved for upper movement until my gums were corrected on my lower jaw which is in progress. The cost for quality of product and service is worth the money!
Helpful?Davina L.Fredericksburg, VA2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteI decided to go with smiles direct club because they were cheaper than Invisalign. The customer support hasn’t been that great. I’ve had multiple issues and they have yet to address those concerns. If you only need a top or bottom aligner, you will be forced to pay the same price as if you had both sets. The impression kit was simple to use and may have been the best part of the entire experience. I can’t honestly recommend them to other people because I haven’t had a good experience with them.
Helpful?Clarissa O.Minnesota3 years agoCrowdingSpacingI did Smile direct for 7 months in total. 5 months to begin and 2 months of refinements afterwards. My dentist was impressed. My reasoning for only 4 stars is the fact that they have SLOW service and response time if you send them emails. My advice is that you just need to consult your DDS before hand. If you dont, and you spend all that money you might be upset if something goes wrong. Why take the risk? Just see your dentist and they will let you know if you are a good fit for SD. If not, dont do it anyway.
Helpful?Alyssa G.New York, NY2 years agoCrowdingSpacingI had a great experience with this company. My box with everything included arrived within 2 weeks of ordering it as promised. I wore the retainers in total for about 5 months and I was able to see results. I mostly had overcrowding but also some spacing issues that it took care of. I changed to a new retainer either weekly or every 2 weeks. The first day I put them in they were tight but I made sure to do it at night so the worst of it would be when I was sleeping and by morning it was mostly better. One retainer did slightly cut into my gums but the kit included a file that I was able to use and file it down. This was a lot less expensive than what my dentist quoted me so is give it a try before you drop $5-6k.
Helpful?Alyssa G.New York, NY2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteI’ve been wearing the aligners for a little over 4 months now and I’ve already seen results. I mainly got them to fix some overcrowding on my bottom teeth. I didn’t want to spend the 6k that my dentist was going to charge me so this was a great alternative. The process has been very easy. I went into smile direct before I ordered them and had a 3D scan – the guy did a wonderful job.
They sent me all the aligners shortly after and I am using their account to track my progress and reminders for when the change the aligners. Some are weekly and some are for 2 weeks. I recommend you get a get the tablets to clean them. You can find them at any drug store or a target. The only issue I had was 1 or 2 of the retainers cut into my guns but they send you a file with your kit and I was able to use that to fix the problem.
Helpful?Kevin D.Charlotte2 years agoCrowdingSpacingOverall, I did this to straighten my teeth. I chose SmileDirectClub because I knew people who already had done it. They have definitely met my expectations thus far because I have seen tangible progress. Customer service was great throughout the process. Nothing feedback-wise, but I would be cognizant of the fact that removing them to eat can be tricky sometimes, especially when going to work. Overall, though, I would definitely recommend SmileDirectClub.
Helpful?Richard R.Delaware3 years agoCrowdingSpacingSmile Direct Club has been nothing short of FANTASTIC for me. I honestly dont really have anything negative to say about Smile Direct Club, outside of the fact that their trays are not very well made. They do get the job done, but literally every one that I used had to be filed down because after a few hours they began to irritate my gums becuase of poorly cut edges. Outside of that, the aligners werent overly expensive, the staff was always helpful, and the treatment only lasted about 8 months for me. I may have had a lucky experience, but for the cost I think it is worth it to take the jump and try it out.
Helpful?Jalicia R.Cincinnati2 years agoCrowdingI chose to purchase the smile direct club aligners because the crowding on my lower teeth had gotten pretty bad. Any time I have a question someone from SDC gets back to me quickly. I am not completely finished yet but I have had fewer headaches and am feeling more confident since starting my aligner journey.
Helpful?Katherine M.UK3 years agoCrowdingI always hated my teeth and was told by 2 dentists that there was no straightening my teeth unless I had 5 teeth out which I found extreme, I thought I would give sdc a try not expecting them to be able to do the bottom, but they did both, totally amazed and thrilled.
Helpful?Ashleigh P.Hagerstown, MD2 years agoCrowdingSpacingOpen BiteI’ve had bad teeth for over ten years. I decided to get aligners because I was never happy with my smile and smile direct seemed the best option. I was so supported by smile direct through every step of the process. I was positively surprised by the treatment process and how easy it was! I say go for it smile direct is great!
Helpful?Nicole M.Plymouth3 years agoCrowdingI’ve always been self-conscience about my overlapping front teeth, I chose SDC because they were the ones I’ve found to be around the longest and seem to be ok for crowding issues.
I’m ok with the results so far, I have one month left of the plan but I have ordered refinements due to the top teeth still kind of protruding outward.
The refinement process has been easy so far, hopefully they will correct the remaining issues. It has only been 4 months so I was expecting to need a little longer of a plan.
I did the at home impression kit, it was very simple with very good instructions and a video I followed as well. My aligners arrived quickly with extras.
If you have a simple fix, I would say go for it!
Helpful?John M.Bayamon, Puerto Rico3 years agoCrowdingSpacingI have been using my aligners for 22 hours a day for 4 months out of my 5-month plan. So far, my only complaint is the quality of the edges of these aligners. They are very sharp and do cut your mouth. I use my wife’s nail file to help out with this. One other thing to note is that they are definitely hard to get a hold of if you have any questions.
Actually, my dentist has been my go-to for all of my concerns because I have been seen by the same dentist for a few years now and he is really welcoming and interested in making sure that my teeth are moving correctly. If you have a good relationship with your dentist, I would suggest talking with them not just before, but also during your questions as it seems like SDC will usually take a few days to respond. Overall, I am pretty pleased. My teeth are not movie star straight, but they are vastly improved.
Helpful?Rene R.Hawaii3 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothI always hated my snaggletooth. I wish I had done this years ago. The process was easy and for the most part comfortable. The step by step process was nice to follow. I have recommended this to so many friends.
Helpful?Ashley B.Myrtle Beach, SC3 years agoCrowdingI went with SmileDirectClub because I saw an ad and the pricing plan for my budget. As someone with overcrowding I never smiled in pictures and my smile was always insecure, after the initial 6-month plan I needed 2 more months which was included they met my expectations. Customer service is hit or miss it’s usually someone from another country handling you then the dental team will email you back, you definitely need to have the patience for this company.
I used the teeth scan at the smile shop at first then for my refinements I used the Impressions. If your thinking about using this company just have patience the price is great you kinda get what you pay for though, the end results worked for me.
Helpful?Brooklyn B.Pittsburgh, PA3 years agoCrowdingSpacingOverall, I do not recommend SmileDirectClub. Customer support was very helpful always but I wasn’t happy with my treatment and how my teeth turned out. Also after my treatment, I had pain in my teeth and after seeing an orthodontist they told me my bite was messed up.
