The majority of Byte customers are happy with their experience, but we are firm believers you should never overlook the negative reviews. And Byte customers do have some complaints.
The most consistent are related to customer support. We’ve spotted a lot of reviews noting long response times, lack of communication, and taking months to resolve pretty simple issues. Other customers have complained that treatment takes longer than they were initially promised.
The best purchase is an informed one, so check out the authentic customer reviews below and see where Byte treatment sometimes goes wrong.
Smile Prep offers readers a small financial incentive in exchange for their unbiased reviews. We require proof of purchase before accepting reviews, and all reviewers must have completed at least three months of aligner treatment. One of my teeth even moved back so far it looked like it could be a second row. One of my top teeth right in the front twisted and turned. My teeth were very embarrassing, I hated smiling.
I requested a kit from byte and it came overnight! The plastic pieces for my mouth were huge and I messed up one mold but the rest were enough to approve me as a candidate. The customer service person I dealt with thru that process + setting up payment was very nice and responsive. Once my aligners came they were easy to use, not too much pain. Trying to communicate with customer service was very hard, usually taking about a week for a reply.
At one point I wasn’t tracking and the process of getting new aligners was actually easier and quicker than I had expected. I started in march 2021 and it’s now December 2021. I was originally quoted 4 months but I’m ok with the fact that it’s taking longer. Rushing the process seems scary!! I am on my last tray for the top and 3 more to go on the bottom. Overall I am estatic with the results!!! But I still am not done! I would definitely recommend byte to other people with mild corrections with the understanding that you might not have the best communication from the company.
Helpful?Dallas K.Cleveland, TN2 years agoCrowdingI’ll start by saying my reason for using aligners was just minor crowding. In researching aligner options I considered a lot of brands, I ended up going with Byte (TLDR: it was a disappointment. Don’t take the cheap route with orthodontics). To be honest Byte had the prettiest packaging and that reeled me in along with the price. I was extremely skeptical about the DIY orthodontics but decided it was worth a shot. I received my impression kit in April 2021 and got right to it. Taking my own impressions was terrible, gross, and also painful due to the trays being way too big for my mouth.
Fast forward, I received my aligners and hyperbite about 4 weeks later. I was hopeful. It took about 2 weeks to adjust to having aligners in my mouth, they were quite painful and destroyed my gums (get a fine grit file, Byte doesn’t care to make sure they’re not sharp). After the first two weeks it was a smooth process, I wore the aligners and used the hyperbite as prescribed. My treatment was set to be finished in august. August came and I reached the last aligner, but my teeth had hardly moved. They looked virtually the same as day 1. I reached out to Byte about my concern and received a response about a week later. They requested that I take pictures of my teeth in my current aligners and send them in. I did.
A week later I get another response requesting that I try on all of my aligners, take pictures of each set, and send those in (was quite inconvenient). A week later, another response saying they will send out another impression kit. I take more impressions, send those in and wait two weeks for a doctor to review them. Then I’m informed that they’re sending out refinement aligners, I get them about 3 weeks later (a 7 week process between informing byte of the issue and receiving the refinements). I am now completely done with my refinement aligners for my bottom teeth and guess what? More refinements are needed, hardly any change again. Starting that 7 week process once again.
Keep in mind my crowding was minor, and they couldn’t even get that right. If I could go back in time I would 1000% spend the extra money and do Invisalign and have it done right under the direct supervision of an Orthodontist. Luckily my teeth haven’t been damaged at all, but that’s also a risk you take with the DIY companies (read your contract). Don’t go the cheap route, invest in quality care.
My before photo was day 1 of aligners, my progress is where I am now. See much of a difference? Me neither, other than my purse being a bit lighter.
Helpful?Mary G.Jacksonville, Florida3 years agoSpacingTooth GapI looked into clear aligners for a few years because I wanted the front gap closed for longer than I can remember. I was leaning toward Invisalign and Smile Direct Club. Last year after giving up on those two because of cost and bad reviews, I started looking into Byte. Having a dentist as the face of the company caught my eye plus they had good reviews so I felt it would be good to go with Byte.
They emailed my weekly almost about continuing with treatment and if I had any questions, which made me feel they would be the same when I got the plan. It was at times but when I really needed to be helped, I felt like I was being ignored.
Everytime I had an issue it was like pulling teeth with tweezers to get them to take care of it. I usually email customer care with most companies because I usually work business hours but with them with issues I had to call because I honestly felt as if I was being ignored. I would send an email and after the normal 24 to 48 hours there was no response but in the mist of an issue I got one email to order retainers and another to review Byte for some whitening foam.
Unfortunately, I needed refinements because the treatment was messing up my bite and the plan was rotating one tooth to the side to close the gap but that was not the plan I agreed to. After weeks of back and forth, I got the impression kit, sent it off, got a new plan, and was told they would be expedited because of all the time spent trying to get in touch with them to even get that far. The normal time is about four weeks, I waited almost two months and had to call them to have it sent. They expedited that time and I got the email about it being shipped the next day. Sadly, the manufacturer completely messed up the aligners and was sent back to square one because they would not have the manufacturer reprint them. I went through the whole process and it has been over 4 months and I am still waiting. They said this time it would be expedited but it has not been over a month and still nothing.
I put my issue on IG and someone from Byte wrote and said they will look into it and get back to me and it has been a week and nothing. I was in the same aligners for almost 4 months with the company not having any noticeable sense of urgency to take care of the issue. Those aligners have since cracked so now I am back a week in aligners again. Since this was after the impressions were done I told them, they said it will be fine, however that is what they said about every issue and it turned out to not be.
I really wish I could recommend Byte but I wouldn’t want to be responsible for anyone feeling ignored and disappointed in an experience as I have been.
Helpful?Jenna P.New York, New York1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteYears back I had braces, but like most teenagers, I was careless and lost the retainer I was instructed to wear daily at night to maintain the corrections. I had some crowding in my bottom teeth and an overbite in my top teeth, so I decided to look into nighttime aligner options. A couple of influencers I follow on Instagram we’re promoting byte and advertising a promo code to get started, so I gave it a try. The customer service is good, and when my first impression set was unsuccessful because the kit was too large, they immediately sent me a new kit to redo my impressions at no cost. However, I am on step 14/15 of my treatment and still not seeing the results I would like, but I am hopeful that they will send some additional aligners to continue my treatment. Overall I would give it a 3.5/5 stars, the packaging and customer service were great, but to be on step 14/15 and still see the crookedness of my bottom teeth is a bit discouraging. I would recommend to a friend for the most part.
Helpful?Brianna S.Wilmington, Delaware2 years agoSpacingI decided to purchase the aligners to make my teeth look better. I only had a lil spacing and wanted it fixed. I chose byte because they cut the process and half and your treatment is done quickly. Some aligners didn’t fit and when I got my retainers they didn’t fit at all. They would not send me another impression kit. So now I reuse my last pair of aligners and still have to pay. I tried contacting them about this issue and they said it was out of their hands.
Helpful?Ursula V.Chicago, IL2 years agoSpacingI originally saw ads for Byte on Instagram. Their support team seemed to be good and they were much cheaper than traditional braces. I only wanted to correct one gap on a side tooth and don’t want to spend much. I was sent an impression kit and signed up. At first everything was phenomenal, I had an intake coordinator I could text or call for quick support as well as someone calling in regularly to check up on me. Soon it all went down hill. Right away I noticed the aligners didn’t seem to fit. I reached out to support with photos and they assured me it was fine. I reached out again regarding a new gap that was forming and was told once again everything was fine. The third time I reached out to support I had a very noticeable gap that I did not have prior to starting byte. Finally they said the aligners were not tracking properly due to the aligners not being correctly made in production.Keep in mind that each time I emailed them it took at least 10 days to get a response. They told me it would cost $700 to get new impressions and aligners set up. I was astounded to have to pay that much when the error was on their end. Nonetheless I tried to pay the fee but received technical errors on the website. I went back and forth with byte for many weeks trying to get the payment issue resolved. My new gap continued to grow and my teeth are spacing out more. I gave up on Byte due to the lack of professionalism. I ended up having to go to a local dentist to start over and fix my smile that was worsened by Byte. The cost was more than Byte but I’m willing to pay more when it comes to quality of service. Byte was a waste of money and made my teeth worse. My confidence went down snd I wish I had never tried Byte.
Helpful?Courtney P.Los Angeles, CA2 years agoI had braces 20 years ago and was still happy with my teeth. The problem was I was chipping my top teeth. This was happening because as my teeth wore down I had 1mm or less of bonding added to the top teeth and this slight increase caused my bite to be slightly off with the movement of my bottom teeth. The ONLY reason I wanted a service like this was to correct the bite so they wouldn’t chip. My dentist offered 8 weeks with Invisaglin and I opted for Byte who recommended 10 weeks.
Byte was about half the price and I liked it was a CA company and they had a special tool. First off I found communicating with Byte annoying. If you send an email they send an email or a text or call. Seems whatever you do they do the opposite or the email went to the wrong person. I would get conflicting info regarding the same question depending on who and when they answered. Lots of cross talk. I found this very annoying. I asked for email only but then it was still hit n miss if the correct person replied. Making the aligner molds was semi not easy due to a gag reflex (same happens in office) but I don’t know anyone who likes doing them.
Anyhow, I received my aligners in a nice box. Let’s call them my first set. Compared to Invisalign they were incomplete and didn’t cover the molars. They also seems to be not as strong – I could compare with my friend who was undergoing major dental work with Invisalign. Mine was supposed to be minor hence using Byte. It had a bubble at the bottom of the bottom aligner which irritated my lip but I figure you get what you pay for. I was wearing them 7 days, 247 and only taking them out to eat or drink a hot drink. I used the vibrating tool every night as directed. Once I accidentally wore them a week longer as I forgot to change them. Oops! At week 8 I contacted Byte to make sure the aligners I received wouldn’t have the same bubble in them. They asked for details and pictures etc and then decided I needed a new set of aligners… 8/9 weeks into my 10 week treatment. More molds were sent to me, I returned them and then I waited for the new retainers… I get these things happen, my teeth seemed fine but by the time all this had happened I had completed my original 10 week plan by a week or two. Now I had seven more weeks….
Same thing again. I again contacted them regarding retainers when the treatment was completed and they decided I needed another 7 weeks. I found this so frustrating. And obviously there is an expected delay in you getting the box to make the molds and then them sending back new aligners. You are still wearing the aligners and waiting. My teeth look too perfect, something I didn’t care about and there’s no way they can possibly move to another position.
My dentist was also confused seeing my teeth had moved into the position she would want them. Byte’s position is if you don’t finish treatment we can’t give you a lifetime guarantee…. I am doing this last set of 7 weeks and wearing them for 10-14 days as now directed, using the tool for 20-30 minutes. I am so done with these things I started wearing in APRIL! I am on week (step) 3 of 7 of my third set. I can’t repair the chips until I’m done. I’m actually glad we have to wear masks LOL!
Helpful?Blake P.Nashville,TN2 years agoMidlineThe start process was simple and byte was easy to communicate with. I was updated along the way on the status of my order from the molds were received to reviewing to them being on the way. Once I received them that is when the communication started to get less responsive. I would reach out for support, get a generic response to send photos and then be told to either brush my teeth before wearing them or a provider will review my response. After completing treatment I requested an additional set because my teeth did not match the plan, I was told it would be an additional $600 even though I already paid in full. In the end they sent me my retainers and we went our ways and I was not satisfied with my smile as promised.
Helpful?Rachel A.Saginaw1 year agoCrowdingOverbiteI do enjoy the aligners and do think they make a difference. The original treatment plan had me wear each one for a week but there was still a lot of air gaps. Now I have to wear them for 2 weeks each. I have like 20 for the bottom and 10 for the top which Is weird because my top are much worse.
I do wish I would have opted for the night aligners instead. Additionally their customer service is AWFUL. It takes them so long to get back to you and it’s a generic and unhelpful response.
Helpful?Sarah S.Bloomington, IL1 year agoCrowdingI was so excited to complete this process. I chose Byte for the overnight option and the guarantee that they offer. Unfortunately for me, it turned out to be a complete waste of money and I was advised by my dentist and an endodontist to discontinue treatment early. An X-ray revealed trauma that was likely caused by the retainers, and continued use would likely result in a root canal. This issue is apparently very in line with my orthodontic history, so it is odd that I was deemed a good candidate to begin with. I would not recommend to any friends, family, or strangers. This has been a negative, costly experience.
Helpful?Daniela R.United States1 year agoCrowdingI was excited to have this product after having braces I didn’t use my retainer and my teeth shifted. The aligners moved my back molars when I contacted support with concern they denied that this could happen. And said this could not happen thier aligners. I had a dentist checkup before starting the treatment so I knew it wasn’t my fault. I wasn’t sure what do after the customer service response and asked for a refund because I had no progress after weeks of following the treatment they refused and I had to go through my bank. Please save your money these treatments do not work!!!
Helpful?Amanda B.Owensboro, KY2 years agoSpacingSnaggletoothI was very skeptical at first. I honestly didn’t think that aligners would do much for me. I don’t have any type of bite, so when it came to aligners, that was going to be the only down fall. Going through the aligners I noticed my confidence was boosting because my teeth were finally becoming straight. I couldn’t believe it!
Helpful?Caitlyn H.Tucson, AZ2 years agoCrowdingMidlineI originally bought aligners because I was self conscious about a tooth in my bottom row that was getting more and more out of line. Byte seemed like a really great option since it was affordable and had a nighttime only option. I’ve had a mixed experience so far, though. I’ve followed my instructions for the most part (their was an extra device that broke for me a few months ago, so I chew on a bit of cloth to get the aligners settled now), but it’s taken way longer than the estimated six months for the nighttime aligners. I wish I’d gone with the all day ones, since I feel like it would be finished by now. The Byte team doesn’t proactively reach out very often. I feel like it’d be a bit better experience with more regular check-ins from them. Overall, I’m going to finish my treatment and I know my teeth are getting straighter, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend the night aligners from Byte to someone else.
Helpful?Jesse W.Conneaut, Ohio2 years agoCrowdingSpacingMy teeth are the first thing you notice about me and I definitely have never liked them. I was looking at options and wanted to find some decently priced and so I stumbled upon byte. Byte molding was easy – the clear braces they send you can really hurt your teeth. I was always bleeding.
Towards the end of my treatment I really couldn’t tell a big difference like it wasn’t what I thought they would turn out to be. I wanted more straighter teeth and one of my teeth was still pushed back. I don’t like having the clear wear in my mouth either – several sores and gum cutting going on. I have permanent scars in my mouth from them. My teeth also wiggle ALOT and it’s very annoying. I will definitely say go to the dentist.
Helpful?Abigail H.Jackson, MS2 years agoCrowdingI wore braces as a kid for about 18 months when I was about 10 years old. Over the years, my teeth shifted significantly and I was having a lot of crowding in my upper and lower front teeth. After reading lots of reviews, I decided to try Byte as they were an at home service with easy access to customer service. However, I was really disappointed by my experience. I wore my initial set of aligners for 12 weeks and had a lot of changes in my back teeth, but it worsened the crowding of my front teeth. It also messed up my bite, so that my teeth no longer touched in the front when I smiled. I reached out to the Byte customer service team and they sent more mold sets and sent me aligners for another 12 weeks. Again, I saw no improvement. After spending over $2000 on aligners only for my teeth to get worse, I finally gave up. The aligners were also incredibly painful, to the point that I had trouble sleeping at night. Even though the customer service was really responsive, I felt that the service and aligners weren’t effective at all, and it was definitely a huge waste of money.
Helpful?Zoe K.Marion, OH2 years agoCrowdingSpacingOverbiteI decided to purchase aligners from Byte because my teeth were crowded on the top and spaced apart on the bottom. Byte only cost me around $2,000. Other aligner companies charged more. They did not meet my expectations. They take a long time to answer. The “retainer” is just another aligner that you are supposed to change every six months. The aligners are painful. The hyperbyte helps the pain some. However, everytime I change aligners I have to use gum relief gel. I recommend using the hyperbyte more than the recommended 5 minutes a day. The aligners gets cloudy fast even when you follow Byte’s cleaning directions. The aligner cleaner/whitening foam is over $20 per little bottle. It last me about a month.
Helpful?Lauren D.Holly2 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothI have always felt self-conscious about my bottom front tooth that is crowded and doesn’t look good in my mouth. After getting some unexpected money I decided that it was time to try and fix the problem. I decided to try and start with Byte and was very hopeful that it might help. I was excited by the packaging, the ease of use and the customer service with Byte. I have not had any results yet. I have contacted them and had them send new retainers twice but I have not seen results yet. I wear them every day and they encouraged me to use the “hyperbyte,” which I do try and use when I have time. About 4 times a week. I included a picture to show that unfortunately several thousands of dollars later and I don’t feel like it’s been much of a difference.
Helpful?Brieanna C.Upland CA1 year agoCrowdingI chose to get aligners due to losing my retainer as a teenager. This caused one tooth to pop out not in alignment with the others. I chose Byte after a friend recommended them. I feel that the support team was okay except when the treatment plan wasn’t going well. They made me jump through hoops to get a revision. I’m going on over year of treatment and was supposed to be done in three months. I have hopped teeth due to the aligners. I would tell others to use a company that you see in person instead of Byte.
Helpful?Salma B.Minneapolis, MN2 years agoOverbiteI decided to get clear aligners to help straighten out my teeth more and get rid of my overlapping on my two front teeth. It was slight but I wanted it to be gone. I decided to use byte because of the reviews I read. I was excited and the process was all super easy. Byte has slow customer service but they always respond. At first it seemed to work great I noticed the shift in my teeth but in the end after I stopped wearing my aligners the overlap slowly started coming back. I’ll have to try and correct it by using the aligners again.
Helpful?Allie H.KY2 years agoCrowdingDecent product. You can see that my teeth have shifted, but they did not track with the original plan. I was supposed to complete treatment in 15-weeks. I have been using the trays for over a year now. My front teeth crowding is still prevalent and I know I have a ways to go.
Helpful?Kelsey S.San Antonio, TX2 years agoCrowdingCrossbiteByte is honestly a company that lives on being “good enough”. I wasn’t happy with my results after I completed my treatment so they sent me additional slingers, again wasn’t happy so they sent more & after that I gave up. My teeth definitely look better, but are they great? No. Are they straight? Not really. I paid almost 2k & I now have to go get braces to actually fix my teeth. Their customer service doesn’t seem to care based on my experience & the comments I’ve seen from others.
Helpful?Nichole KlingemanLa Crosse, WI1 year agoCrowdingSnaggletoothOverbiteI purchased the Byte Daytime treatment plan package for all day aligners for my son ($1,895.00) on 10/31/2020. It was a total of 24 top aligners and 21 bottom. The first set was the first 15 aligners. I emailed with issues if excessive bleeding on 1/9/2021. explained blood was coming out from around the teeth and filling up his aligners. no cuts or abrasions. The teeth were moving, loose and bleeding. Was told it was normal. The bleeding was sporadic, we left some in for 2 weeks instead of the 1 week. Thought this might help the bleeding and loose teeth if it were more gradual. On 4/14 I had emailed we were on week 12/15. 4/19 they requested updated photos of his teeth. Had to resend them 3 times, as they were having “technical difficulties” over 3 weeks, they acknowledged the receipt on 5/9. stated it would be 3-4 weeks before the other liners to be shipped and continue to wear step 15 aligners until we started the next step so he didn’t lose progress. We were happy to leave the step 15 in and it seemed to help ease the bleeding and some discomfort. In the meantime we received the 2nd shipment. Because he was getting so much relief from staying in step 15 he continued to use them until October. On 10/12 I messaged them that we had went to transition to the next aligners and they did not fit. They requested we fill out a Professional care support request, which we did immediately. On 10/19 I emailed them to follow up, as I hadn’t heard back. They stated that they had sent an email. I received it later that day. they were requesting more photos/info, I sent. On 10/26 they requested MORE photos/info, I sent. They had us trim the liners/use warm water to get them to fit – did not work. We had to do new impressions. after receiving them they did not fit either. Meanwhile he was in the step 15 so long he got a bad mouth infection. Doctor believes from wearing same liners too long, they have bacteria build up. Since the “new” liners don’ fit again, we just want a refund. Upon denial, I filed a complaint with The BBB. They keep replying to my case that they will reach out to me, but I have not gotten any new correspondence. I know they offer a lifetime guarantee, but that doesn’t mean much if the aligners don’t fit. I would highly recommend choosing a different company.
Helpful?Zara H.USA2 years agoSpacingTooth GapOverbiteI had a huge gap in my front teeth and overbite. I looked at Invisalign and they cost double what byte was offering so I opted for byte. However, byte has the worst customer service ever. It is so hard getting in touch with an agent. It’s 2 years later and I still have not received by retainers. I do not recommend them to anyone.
Helpful?Paradise E.Tuscaloosa, AL2 years agoCrowdingCrossbiteTried BYTE because they had the best reviews and had the “lifetime smile guarantee” and that was a great option. Also was in the Forbes so that was another great aspect that I was looking at. Other aligners had reviews and I didn’t see any on BYTE anywhere.
Helpful?Hailey H.USA2 years agoCrowdingSpacingI have always been self conscious about my teeth, so when I saw byte’s promise about straightening my teeth in less than a year for less then half the price of braces with a smile for life guarantee I was all in! Half way through my treatment my teeth were looking straighter already! I had very high hopes. But towards the end of my treatment I noticed my teeth weren’t as straight as they had promised.
When I emailed customer care they asked for a few quick pictures and sent another months worth of aligners. But when those aligners were done and my teeth still weren’t straight they asked me to send more pictures with the aligners on. The lady I was emailing back and forth with told me that the new ones didn’t fit my teeth and that I need to go back to the old aligners. Well the old ones don’t fit anymore being that I had just finished a whole month of the new ones. And after that their customer care teem ghosted me.
So now if I want to get my teeth as straight as I’d like them to be I’ll have to start all over with another option and pay all over again. Sad since they have a guarantee but don’t even abide by it…
Helpful?Lindsey C.Plant City, FL2 years agoCrowdingSpacingI chose online aligners because the of convenience of not going into the dentist for aligners. I specifically chose the at night option because of the shortened timeline and only having to wear the aligners at night so it was less disruption to my life. So far the company has not met my expectations. I was ensured a 15 week treatment plan and I have been wearing the aligners for 8 months and still nowhere near that projected outcome. I found their advertising is very faulty in promising you only need to wear each set for one week. The customer service is OK, but very slow. It’s hard to get a told of somebody on the phone, and emails take up to seven days to respond. I would not recommend Byte at night.
Helpful?Sarah W.Metairie2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteOpen BiteByte damaged my teeth (as seen by the greying) to the point where my dentist was concerned about irreversible damage and tooth loss. I had to discontinue prior to completing treatment, and have since spent over $7k repairing the damage and paying for traditional braces. Not only were my teeth grayed and damaged, but my bite and tooth placement was worse after discontinued treatment than it had been to begin with.
Helpful?Sienna B.Hampton Bays2 years agoCrowdingOverbiteMidlineI wanted straighter teeth before my wedding. Byte was the cheapest.
They have not yet met my expectations; treatment aligners sometimes did not fit properly which held up treatment.
I wanted to correct crowding.
Customer support is quick and easy to reach, minus some long wait times on some days.
The impression kit and teeth scan were easy to do but time-consuming.I would give this advice: to expect the treatment to take way longer than planned. Also- get wisdom teeth removed prior to starting treatment.
Helpful?Paula H.San Diego2 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothOverbiteDid Byte because of the night only option of wear which fit my lifestyle. Byte customer service has been average. My main issue is the minimal progress I have made after 14 months of treatment. I may be doing this for another 6+ months.
Helpful?Paula H.San Diego2 years agoCrowdingSnaggletoothOverbiteMidlineNot much change yet. I’ve had a lot of issues making any progress in my treatment.
